Sound. Space. Light. Movement - Review of a special performance at the Sprengel Museum

In C is an early work of minimal music composed in 1964 by Terry Riley for any number of unspecified performers - a milestone of musical freedom and openness.

An evening that combined sound, light and movement to create a sensual overall experience: in the choreographed sound-space performance by In C Ensemble Megaphon, the Gohar ensemble (directed by Ehsan Ebrahimi) and the Collegium Vocale choir (directed by Florian Lohmann) came together for an extraordinary musical interplay.

Around 80 performers were spread across several levels of the Calder Hall. While they played and sang, dancer Oren Lazovski moved in his minimalist choreography. Franz Betz's light art objects bathed the room in a poetic light and made the music a visual experience.

The programme was complemented by spherical works by Morton Feldman, sonorous Renaissance choral pieces and free improvisations by Ensemble Megaphon. The audience was invited to move freely through the rooms and experience the programme from different perspectives - a meditative, multi-layered sound experience that had a long-lasting effect.
